I spent the day on Amtrak yesterday. What a way to run a railroad.

I came up from Washington where I was conversing with NPR folks about the relationship between member stations and National Public Radio. I'm sure that you'll be reading more about that in this blog in the future.

While I was asleep Sunday Night in a Washington hotel room, the cell phone rang and I heard some of the worst words I can remember. Our chief engineer, James Scholefield's house went up in flames in Germantown, New York and three people in the family were killed. Two of them were children. There is nothing worse than having a child die and our hearts go out to Jimmy and Korrena and to their son, James, who made it out of the house. We are all in shock and we are all grieving and we all want to do something for the family. I can't really write more about this, it's all too much. Below you'll see how you can help if you want to. The Scholefield Family Relief Fund

A fatal overnight fire in the Columbia County town of Germantown destroyed the home of WAMC Chief Engineer James Scholefield and his wife Korrena Salerno. The couple's daughter Carianne, Korrena's mother Linda Forstrom and Forstrom's daughter Mara Mahig did not survive the blaze. James, Korrena and son Jim escaped. Scholefield has been treated for burns resulting from rescue attempts. The Red Cross is assisting with the family's immediate needs. The home and all contents were destroyed. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. All of us at WAMC extend our thoughts and prayers to Jim and his family at this trying time.
