Alan Chartock shares his thoughts for today....
Paul O'Neill Spills the Beans
Is it just me or is there a foul smell around here? Former Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill has spilled some Bush secrets in a new book It would appear that the President wanted into Iraq way before 9-11. Boy are we surprised by that! It's one thing to know it and another to have what you intuitively know, confirmed by someone who was in the room when the plot was being hatched.
You've got to love O'Neill who says he is rich and old and wonders what they can do to him. Naturally, he can't be allowed to leak confidential documents to a writer so he's being investigated by the same people who can't seem to find the folks who gave Bob Novak (the right wing mouth) information about one of our CIA agents who just happened to be married to someone the White House was mad at for saying there was no evidence that Iraq was trying to buy bomb fixings from Niger.
Since many reporters also got the same leak you'd think that the FBI would have figured all of this out by now but apparently not in the Ashcroft Justice Department. Naturally, Ashcroft has recused himself.
Of course, now it appears that O'Neill is heading for the hills and seems to be in active reverse, I wonder what happened? What do you think? Maybe someone, or thing, may have gotten to O'Neill. It appears that he is now thinking over his earlier words. I wouldn't want to be him.
